What is the the difference in Certificate attestation and apostille in India

The difference between the two processes is in the way the documents are signed and stamped. On 5th October 1961, a convention was held at Hague called the Apostille Convention. Signatories of the Convention affix apostilles on the documents of their citizens instead of attesting them. So, when citizens move from one country to another where both the countries are signatories of the Convention, the documents are apostilled. However, when a citizen moves from a signatory country of the Hague Convention to a non-signatory country, or from a non-signatory country to another non-signatory nation, the documents need to be attested.

The other difference in the process is the Embassy attestation. While in the case of attestation, this is a mandatory process; in the case of an apostille, the attestation from the Embassy is usually not required.

When is attestation required?

Attestation is typically mandatory for various international purposes, including:

  • Visa and passport applications
  • Immigration procedures
  • Educational credential verification (WES, IQAS)
  • Equivalency requirements for the Ministry of Education in India
What's the difference between attestation and apostille?

The key distinction lies in the method of document verification:

  • Apostille: This simplified process applies to countries that are signatories to the Hague Convention (Oct 5, 1961). An apostille sticker is affixed on documents by the competent authority in the issuing country.
  • Attestation: This process is used for documents going to non-Hague Convention countries or from a non-Hague Convention country to another non-member nation. It typically involves a multi-step verification process by relevant authorities in India and the embassy/consulate of the destination country.
